Day 9: Ryokan Seiryu, Takayama

Miyagawa Morning Market

There are two morning markets in Takayama, both are along the river, Miyagawa and Jinya-Mae.  They open everyday from 6am until 12pm.  Mostly selling fresh fruits and vegetables but also souvenirs and at Miyagawa market, the shops opposite market all along the way sell heaps of snacks and local products.

We only have time to visit one of the market, we went to Miyagawa market.  We didn't get much stuff from the market more like buying snacks actually from the shops opposite the market.  Don't miss the mushroom pickles with wasabi, highly recommended.  Hence, it was just purely heaven walking along this beautiful river with the warm touch of morning sun.

No face doll is very popular in Takayama

Their mushroom pickle with wasabi is absolutely the best

This ryokan is located only few blocks away from station.  Very easy to find, just walk straight ahead from Takayama station then turn left at the 6th intersections and the ryokan just on your right.  Although, this ryokan is not as big as Kokuya ryokan that we stayed while we were in Shibu Onsen, but in here feeling more homey and comfortable to stay.  The staffs here are very polite and friendly, they are very helpful as well.

Hey!!!!  Our name is on the board...

For our first night in Seiryu, we include Japanese dinner and breakfast as well.  The good thing is dinner served in our own room.  The shabu shabu meal is accompanied by few other small condiments dishes.  Everything on the table were absolutely delicious.  They were freshly made, presentation was very pretty too and most importantly they were tasteful and flavoursome.  Also, as we have it in our own room, is more relaxing atmosphere and no time limit.  What a great night!!!

For the next day breakfast, after a good night sleep last night, we have it in their dining room.  The breakfast is a set of small food and serve with Takayama's popular dish, Hoba miso steak, cooked to your liking.  They are ready on our table, the breakfast set is served on the wooden box.  Once we open it, they are nine tiny dishes on the different shaped and coloured bowls.  They are very pretty and appetising too.  And Mango pudding is given to us at the of the meal.

Sannomachi
Old Town (Sannomachi), Takayama

Gohei Mochi 180yen

3 pieces sushi 900yen

2 pieces for 800yen
We saw this long queue in the sushi stall along Sannomachi or Old Town.  We definitely went and joinned the line.  Something good surely await at the end of the line.  That's true!!!  Those beef nigiri and steak tartare-like sushi complete with little quail yolk on top were absolutely wonderful and tasty and nothing can possibly come close or compare to this gorgeous little haven.  Extremely delicious, very very enjoyable to eat and full of flavour as well.  The rice cracker underneath as the serving dish is edible too.  We even back for second, it was certainly worth the wait.

Taiyaki 200yen/5 pieces
So looking forward to try this tiny taiyaki (fish shaped waffle with filling), however, as they already cooked much earlier, so taiyaki was cooled and wasn't as good as they suppose to be warm and fresh. They have five different fillings: chocolate, cheese, sausage, sweet bean, and sweet potato.  But that matcha green tea was frosty and delicious.  Very pleasant to drink in this cold weather.  And sitting in this cafe also feel very cozy overlooking the small Japanaese garden.

Sake breweries are easily recognised by Sugidama (balls made of cedar branches) hung over their entrance.  And this one type of sake in huge version as a symbol of the sake shop (as photo below) are normally stacked in front of the shop.  I also got that sake to bring home, it was 2,650yen for 720ml, quite pricey, but the packaging was so cute.
