A Little About Surabaya Food

Old time snack

Pasar Atom is one of my favorite mall in Surabaya.  You can almost get everything you need in one place.  You can get things from fashion, watches, dvds, furniture, kitchen appliances, snacks and so on.  The place is so massive yet not-so-luxury.  The old site of this mall is pretty hot with no air-conditioning but the selling price is much cheaper than the mall site where shops are pretty new complete with air- conditioning.  Bargaining skill is highly needed in here unless for some shops that already put the fix price tag.

Not only for shopping, their food and drinks in there are totally heaps and heaps.  If you don't know what to choose, you can visit the food court on level 4.  It will give you even more headache, spoilt with abundant of choices.  Although the tables and chairs are plenty, but in the lunch time you better save some sits before actually ordering the food or if you come with your friend, you can swap around.  Otherwise is pretty hard in finding one.

You can place an order, then pay money first.  Most of the stalls will give you a queue number to hold on.  Then the waitress will delivery it to your table.  You only need to point roughly where your sit is and she will come looking for you.  I'm so amazed by their talent on finding the whereabouts of customers.  Even me at that time were looking for my parent who reserved the table for us, took me nearly 10 minutes.  The food usually comes very quick and they're all yumm..  If you are not the locals, just look at the most busy stall which normally should be the best one in there.  No worries about the price, it is pretty cheap as they are too much competitors around.

Culinary Journey - Indonesia (Part 9 - ends)

Previously:

As nowadays, Garuda Airline change their meal time to breakfast for midnight flight.  So, I have to fill up my tummy before the flight in one of the lounge at the airport.  Lounge in Indonesia is far different from the lounge in Sydney, from what I experienced.  In Sydney, Qantas lounge for example, is the place for you to relax with sipping some wines and munching some light snacks while waiting for your flight.  But here in Surabaya, is more likely for a serious food hunter.  Many variety of heavy food and snacks too.

Culinary Journey - Indonesia (Part 7)

This time, I also posting about more of Indonesian street food and snacks that you could easily get from all around Indonesia or Surabaya in particular.  So enjoy, Octie Appetie...

Nasi Goreng
Nasi Goreng Duk Duk
We called it Nasi Goreng Duk Duk because originally this dish is sold from the moving cart in the village and the seller will continuously hit a block of bamboo-like wood when he walk around the village, so people can hear from inside the house.  And that's sounds "duk... duk... duk...".  That's where the name comes from.

Nasi Campur
Nasi Campur
Nasi Campur is another popular food for locals and also tourists.  It basically is a set of plain rice and a few different food that comes with it.  Normally, they always have meat, egg and vegetables.  And not to forget spicy Indonesian sambal.  Very practical and also very delicious.

Kerupuk Kampung
Indonesian people loves their Kerupuk.  We have heaps types of kerupuk.  The most common one is this Kerupuk Kampung.  It goes very well with any kind of rice dishes, soto, rawon, rujak, and any food that you prefer.

Kerupuk Kampung
Onde-Onde (deep fried sesame balls with soy bean filling) and Roti Goreng (deep fried sweet bread)

This blog is one of my favourite, as it is enclosed the beauty of Indonesian food, snacks and drinks that you could indeed get all of them from the shopping mall.  So, for ladies especially, before doing your all day shopping in the mall, you can keep yourself energise with some yummy breakfast, then after tiring from walk you can also have some light snacks and refreshing drinks, and of course a nice dinner again with your besties.  Or, for guys out there, you won't be bored accompanying your girlfriends for shopping as you can stay all day with delicious foods, but leave some room for dinner with your girlfriend as she definitely would be hungry after long day shopping.

J Co Donuts

Some of the flavours that I got from the box are: (clockwise from top left) Cheese me up, Avocado Dicaprio, Choco Nutzy, Green Tease, Hello Berry, and A1 Capone Mona Risa (Tomato and Ham Donut). Their names are quite fancy but as good as their taste though.

We also tried their J.Co Katsu (photo below), it's basically a burger like Chicken Katsu and drizzled with mayo and chilli sauce.  It was yummm...

For people who not really familiar with Indonesia, we actually have such an amazing country, full of culture, plenty of nice foods and friendly people.  Sounds like I'm bragging too much but I personally believe that Indonesia has a lots of potential to be famous in the tourism industry.  However, I see that government didn't put too much effort in promoting it.  Although, most of people already known Bali but most of them don't realise that it is part of Indonesia and there are still many other beautiful places to visit beside Bali and more other delicious food to try beside Nasi Goreng.  So, if you like travelling and want to explore something new, put Indonesia in one of your list.

Culinary Journey - Indonesia (Part 5)

Previously:

All about food in this series of Indonesian blogs.  So hope you guys enjoy it.  Octie Appetie.

This time I picked one restaurant that got mixed between Indonesian and Chinese cuisine.  Apparently, you can find heaps of restaurants in Surabaya that influenced or combined with Chinese flavour in their cooking.

Left: Es Sirsak (Soursop) Rp.12,000 (about $1.20)  and Right: Es Jeruk (Orange Juice)

Avocado Juice
Avocado Jade - Avocado Juice Rp. 16,000 (about $1.65)

Kodok Saus Inggris
Kodok Saus Inggris (Frog with Worcestershire Sauce) Rp. 57,500 (about $5.90)
Although not much meat you can scrap out of this little frogs but that tiny bits were absolutely delicious.  The meat was pretty tender and the winner definitely is the sauce that they cooked with.  Balanced of saltiness, sweetness and a little bit tanginess.  However, the let down was they didn't actually chop the finger tip of this creature, for me, it makes the food look less appetising.

Bebek Panggang
Bebek Panggang (Roast Duck half) Rp. 52,500 (about $5.40)
I found that this duck is not that juicy and meaty compared to what a good Roast Duck should be.  Though, the skin were really crispy and flavoursome but still not up to the scratch.

Sapo Tahu Seafood
Sapo Tahu Seafood (Tofu and Seafood Hot Pot) Rp. 50,000 (about $5.15)

Tim Ikan Ala Bawang Putih (Steamed Fish with Garlic and Soy Sauce) Rp. 55,000 (about $5.70)

When you taste the flesh, you can tell straight away that this fish was extremely fresh but unfortunately that good flesh spoilt by an overpowering load of fresh garlic.  Too much until it killed the other flavour, only garlic that I could taste. What a shame!!!

Culinary Journey - Indonesia (Part 4)

Hachi Hachi is one of the high-end famous modern Japanese restaurant's chain in Indonesia.  Thus you can expect some freshness and high quality produce from them with a reasonable price.  Their menu ranges from variety of sushi, rolls to modern Japanese a la carte and their food's taste is absolutely delicious no doubt about that.  Here are just a few shoot of the food (I didn't take all of them, because we were extremely starving so everyone just dig in and snatched them before I had a chance to grab my camera) and I can't remember most of the names as well.  I know that this blog maybe pretty hopeless and lack of info but just hope you guys still enjoy looking at the photos of the restaurant and maybe get some idea out of it.  Octie Appetie...

The Salmon Dip
The salmon is very very fresh and they come with a sort of yummy crunchy topping sauce. The sauce is actually mixed of mayo and cheese.

I think this one called "Dragon Rolls"

Grilled Eel Sushi
I liked this dish so much, it's like a sushi rolls with a twist. They coated with crumbs then deep fried so gave them a nice texture combination.  Plus the topping and sauce on top were delightful as well.
