Culinary journey - Indonesia (Part 3)

Previously:

I have to admit this is my first time to dine in this talk-of-the-Surabaya-town restaurant.  It might sounds a bit shameful to say that I just found out very recently from my cousin !!  Apparently, this day more and more Indonesian fine dining has mushroomed up and having this kinda theme and authentic Indonesian outdoor ambience.  I mean surrounded and decored with beautiful pool, nice Javanese garden and an individual verandah dining space which is absolutely perfect for a romantic night out !!  But I am warning you though, at night the mosquitos here could go a little crazy.  For you whose would like to enjoy their dinner on your private time, there is also a traditional dining hut built on stilt available and you might as well ask the lovely waiters for the mosquitos repellent.  Just in case :)

Overall, the food here were great, service was of course lovely and top up with the beautiful ambience. well what can I say, highly recommend.

Bir Bintang
Won't call it a night without our proud Bir Bintang!!

Right: Ikan Bakar Kecap and Left: Cumi Pedes Manis

Kepiting Telor Asin
Kepiting Telor Asin
Word can't describe enough of how yummy this dish was.  I ABSOLUTELY loved it.  It wasn't too salty like I often find in Sydney and the crab itself were very fresh too.  I want more !!

Kangkung Belacan

Don't forget to ask for some Indonesian Sambal Ulek (Chilli sauce)

In the morning, you will see the lovely garden, man-made waterfall and canal along the restaurant but at night it turns into the romantic mood with the right subdued and glowing dim lights.

Culinary Journey - Indonesia (Part 2)

Previously:

As I mentioned before in my previous blog, that you could get hell lot of food from a simple snack to a serious gourmet meal in the malls in Indonesia.  Especially for this Surabaya Town Square or locals say Sutos mall.  I don't recommend this place for a shop alcoholic but definitely a great place for food maniac.  As they have more restaurants and food stalls than the shopping shops in Surabaya.  Today we landed in this food court like place, called D'kampoeng.  What I mean is, in this food court they have ranged of stalls selling different type of food specifically for traditional Indonesian cuisine.  First when you walk in to the food court, they will give a stamp card (like we normally get from Yum Cha restaurant), browsing along the stalls and you can order whatever you like and as much as you want, then they will stamp on your card for that purchasing, then simply grab your seat and when your food is ready they will serve it to your table.  Very simple!! (no need to pick up the food by yourself), and at the end just bring your card to the cashier next to the exit door for the bill and hopefully not damaging your wallet to much.  Nahh!!  I don't think it would anyway, the food price here are pretty reasonable and so worth it.

Nice and classic Indonesian-style decoration

Not only providing a classic Indonesian favourites, but with their decorations is kinda bring you to feel like you actually having a street food with most of the stalls displaying the food in their original and traditional cart that they use out there on the street.

Cart for selling Soto Ayam

Es Jeruk Nipis (Ice Lime) and Es Sinom (Tumeric drink)
Sinom drink is very very refreshing, served cold, super delicious and one of my favourite drink of all time especially in the summer heat like here in Indonesia.  It's made from turmeric so they have this authentic fragrant and sweet taste.  Probably a little bit too extreme for anyone who never try this before but why not!!  However, it is a sophisticated drink (although I never make one) and not all the shop could nail this drink though, if you can find the good one just stick with it.  But I do not recommend you guys to try it here, it doesn't taste up to my standard of what Es Sinom should be.  The good one that I discovered is in the PTC/Supermall (I will talk more about this in later post)

Nasi Ayam Penyet
Nasi Ayam Penyet
It's a deep fried chicken then squashed on the the Sambal ulek. Spicy sambel and crispy chicken with hot steam rice.  They just works so well !!  This dish is one a nation's favorite I'd say.

Soto Ayam
Soto Ayam 'Pak Sadi'
Soto dish itself is already yummy but THE secret to make it even better is to have it with 'Koya' or a powder of mixed prawn crackers (photo: on the far top in the red condiment, ask for extra if you want too) , chilli, squeeze of lime and Krupuk, the best one to go with is Kerupuk Kampung or Kerupuk putih (Indonesian cracker) !!!

Bubur Madura
Bubur Madura (Sweet Rice Flour Porridge) is a traditional street food and generally consist of coconut rice flour porridge, pearls, black sticky rice and some other colourful things (sumsum, jenang, ketan, I don't know how we say it in English, my apologise). You just need to pick whatever you like and then they will finish it with sweet palm sugar on top. then enjoy :)

Bubur Madura
Ta..dah.. for my liking I love just a simple one, mixed of that coconut porridge (slightly salty) and sticky pink coated with shredded coconut then heaps of strusselled palm sugar. sooo yummmmm....

Culinary Journey - Indonesia (Part 1)

Jet off to Surabaya with Garuda Airline.  It was surprisingly nice and very cosy and the most importantly, feeling like I am already at home for some reason.  10 years ago if you ask me to fly with Garuda, I'd be like "umm maybe nah" but the fact is, in the past few years, Garuda Airline has got its face lifted and was voted to be the most improved airline.  Anyway, I was so excited and really looking forward to this trip because it has been quite a while since I haven't been back to my hometown, Surabaya.  This time one of my BFF is getting married and I take this chance to full fill my trip with my childhood's favourites as well but it doesn't mean to limit the possibility of trying new yummy food too.  I brought my hubby along with me, so he can indulge in the good food, good life and good company.

There isn't any direct flight from Sydney to Surabaya, so what I do is to transit in Bali first then catch another domestic flight from there.  Flight takes approx 45 mins from Bali to Surabaya.  Surabaya is probably not a well-known city like Jakarta or Bali, lots of foreigner are not even aware of its existence but IT IS actually the second biggest city in Indonesia.  There's a lot less traffic yet virtually as metropolis and bustling as the capital city Jakarta.  It also maybe less trendy but hands down when comes to FOOD, this is unofficially named as "the kitchen of Indonesia". no doubt about that.  And for me, definitely the best place to live and well worth to visit (cityism).

Flight's snacks

I have been flying with many airlines, I have to say Garuda airline's food is one of the top 3 delicious airline's food for me personally.  The best part would be those mango ice cream, usually they always give out Magnum ice cream but they don't have it today and gave Weis ice cream instead, I was quite dissapointed at first, but well that mango ice cream was converted me, it was refreshing and tropical-y (nice way to start my journey in the tropical country) and I will definitely buy one from the market if I see it.

Another great service, that I haven't found in any other airline so far is that they provide the immigration clearance on the plane.  Yes, Immigration check, stamp your passport on the thousands km high up in the sky.  So, when we arrive the airport, we only need to show this express pass and shot off.  What a very convenient and speedy immigration process.

Once we landed in Surabaya, without wasting any second of it, we headed to the newly opened shopping mall in Surabaya called Ciputra world.  Shopping was part of it, but mainly for eating.  In Indonesia, when you imagining of shopping mall nothing near what we have in Sydney, like Westfield or MYER.  Here, is all massive, heaps of shops, and plenty of restaurants and food court.  You'll need to witness this with your own eyes so you'll know what I mean.

Left: Markisa Ice (Passionfruit drink) Rp. 8000 (about 80 ¢)
Right: Greentea smoothies and Choco Oreo Rp. 17,500 each (about $1.80)

Condiments: Cucumber Pickles and chilli & soy sauce dipping sauce

Ote Ote
Ote Ote (deep fried shrimps with batter) Rp.10,000 (about $1)
The traditional Ote-Ote is more like a snack bite size, however this more like the modern style Ote-Ote, where the crispy soft skin on the outer with heaps of minced feeling.  Nothing near the original Ote-Ote dish that I usually know when I was a child, this is more like a meaty and soft crepes while the real tradition Ote-Ote should be quite crispy, battery and full of prawnish flavoured.  Apart from it, this dish taste good too, we just need to not call it Ote-Ote, I guess.

Udang Mayo
Udang Mayo Rp.45,000 (about $4.60)
I like this particular dish.  Crispy light battered prawns served it with sweet tangy homemade mayo.  They worked so well together.

Ifumie Ultah
Ifumie Ultah Rp.25,000 (about $2.60)
Ifumie Ultah, the word "ultah" is actually the abbreviation of "ulang tahun" where it means birthday.  The reason behind this is a simple Ifumie (noddle with gravy) dish that served with extra red coloured quail eggs, because as our tradition for a birthday's meal we always include this red-coloured egg (must be red or at least pink colour) on the dish.  So yeah as simple as that.

Burung Dara
Burung Dara Ngo Hiong Rp.80,000 (about $8.25)
Burung dara is actually a pigeon.  Yes you heard it right ! A pigeon !  My apologise, it may sounds too cruel for some of you guys who never know that pigeon is actually edible, but unfortunately they taste ABSOLUTELY incredible, hmmmm... similar like quail meat. This one especially been marinated with Ngo Hiong or Chinese five spice then deep fried so it crispy on the outside and still juicy and tender inside along with salt pepper dipping powder.  Taste undoubtedly delicious.  All I can say is, once you give it a go. You'll be either like it or love it !

Sapo Tahu Seafood
Sapo Tahu Seafood (Tofu and Seafood Hotpot) Rp.42,500 (about $4.40)

Congratulations for the beautiful bride...
