3 Days 2 Nights Eating Trip in Melbourne Part 2: Novotel South Wharf Hotel

Previously:

We stayed at Novotel hotel in South Wharf, it has a great location, right opposite DFO.  Best location for shopaholics.  The closest tram stop from here is the one near the casino.  Although this stop is outside the free-tram zone, however, if you want to go to mid-city area (anywhere within green coloured zone), locals have advised me that people don't normally pay when get in from there as it is only one stop away from free zone.

What I love about Melbourne is that they have free tram services in this town.  Sydney, better look up on this!!!  Btw this "3 days 2 nights" trip in Melbourne would be full-on eating trip for us.  We didn't visit any tourist places or sightseeing.  So, unfortunately if you wanna get ideas for places to visit in Melbourne, unfortunately, you are in the wrong blog.  But, if you wanna know good restaurants to eat, YES!!  You are definitely in the right place.

3 Days 2 Nights Eating Trip in Melbourne: Sleep at Gundagai Motel and Breakfast at Early Bird Cafe, Albury

Over the long weekend in early October, we decided to drive down to Melbourne.  We left home around 5pm.  It would normally take around 10 hours driving straight from Sydney to Melbourne.  But my husband, he has no liking for driving in Australia at night, simply because of those wildlife animals that might jump out of the bush all of sudden.  So, we stayed overnight at Gundagai Motel before continuing to our destination the next day.  Gundagai is a tiny town somewhere in the middle between Sydney and Melbourne.

We notified the reception that we will be arriving late so she advised us on how to do self-check-in.  It was pretty easy and straight forward.  Btw each room has a designed car park as well which is very convenient.  The room was clean and functional, great for recharging our body before another journey.

The next morning, we left early because we were aiming to arrive Melbourne before noon, if we could.  So, we had a brief stop at Albury for breakfast.  There were a few cafes open already early in the morning in this area, but we landed at Early bird cafe as recommended by one of our local friends there.  It was homey and their menu are quite simply yet they done it well.   Their coffee was smooth and delicious as well.

Old Town Kopitiam, Melbourne (Day4, part2)

Left: Es Bandung and right: Es Milo

Hainanese Chicken Rice
This dish wasn't either good or bad.  The chicken served on the bed of sprouts with splash of soy sauce was actually pretty alright and the chilli and ginger shallot oil on the side lifted up the taste of the dish.

Nasi Lemak with Rendang
I quite like this Nasi Lemak dish, the Beef Rendang which was the hero of this classic Malaysian dish was flavoursome and juicy tender but my only concern was not having enough of the condiments on the side to go with, I definitely need more of them especially those fried anchovies, they are just so addictive and the best companion ever.

Snacks Time in Melbourne (Day4, part1)

It was our last day in this beautiful Melbourne and we attempted to challenge our eating ability to fit some yummy snacks before heading back home..  On our wish lists today, starting with yummy breakfast at Lord Of The Fries then move on with some sweet indulgent Churros from Spanish Doughnut, since we satisfied with these two gorgeous snacks from our previous visit.  Later for lunch we gonna have the exotic Malaysian cuisine at Old Town Kopitiam.

Nuggets with Vietnam sauce
This chicken nuggets were pretty crispy as expected and this time we went for the Vietnamese topping sauce which was very appetizing and perfectly match with the nuggets.

I've noticed that nowadays they add alot more snacks on the menu like nuggets, onion rings and even burgers.  Maybe because the shop wants to offer more varieties but seriously, even just an ordinary plain hot chips with those clever, exotic dipping sauces would be more than enough to get me keep on coming back.  Sometimes less is more. Don't you think so ?????

Fries with African sauce
The main actor of LOTF is definitely their yummy dipping sauces, so much varieties to choose from to keep everybody's tastebud satisfied.  What can I say about their chips, it is obviously a hand-cut chips, quite chunky and crispy in a way and the dipping sauce is generously overflow on top like a hot lava ensuring your delightful until the last bit of it.  Few sizes available too from as small as they called it a sampler for $2.95 to the biggest one which come in a box for $6.95.

Now, lets move on for some sweet delights...

Clockwise from top left: Spanish Hot Chocolate (Hazelnut flavour) $5.55, Churros with Chocolate sauce, Triple Cheese Churros
I absolutely have no idea what's going on with the weather, this year around I haven't felt any real Summer sun in Australia (no complain though, I like it that way).  It's like 27 December right in the middle of Summer, but here in Melbourne feeling like I'm in Europe or something with only less than 20 freakin' degree on midday.  Plus it was really windy and chilly to the max.  I've noticed that everytime I have churros here in Melbourne the weather was so brutally freezing and windy, I mean its good to sipping those hot rich chocolate and warm churros, but honestly, my chocolate dipping sauce just turn frozen in seconds... so instead of for dipping I just ate it like a chocolate bar LOL...

That's it for the complain, but for taste wise it's never ever disappointed me.  The churros was very light and crunchy and those chocolate sauce was to-die-for.

On the other hands, those three cheese churros was nearly inedible, the dough was tough, abit burn and cold, the cheese inside was also hard and not melting-like as I expected it, I would say!!!

PS: Thanks GOD!!!! Do you guys know that we don't have to fly over to Melbourne no more, just to enjoy this deadlicious sweets, because they newly opened one of their brand here in Sydney. YES!!! It is right in the Macquarie Shopping Centre (next to Events Cinema). Yuhhhuuuuu!!!!!

Those cafes on the laneways always be a charming place to dine for me.  Outdoor seats, under their gentle morning sun and the cool breeze while enjoying your favourite breakfast, isn't it sound lovely??  But with this trip I was be a little naughty and didn't really stick to the plan that's why I had no time to fit this cafe breakfast thing in my short trip this time.  And we heading for the Malaysian cuisine for our last meal instead....

Lotus cake with salted egg yolk inside

Lygon Street, Melbourne (Day3, part2)

Lygon street is a very popular and magnetic street in Melbourne renown for their Italian eatery paradise.  The busiest place is starting from the junction of Lygon street with Queensberry Street and kinda ended in Elgin Street.  So, along both side of the street, all you can see is these Italiano restorante' everywhere calling you to try their homemade pasta or traditional pizza.

I warn you!!  This street is very touristy which I believe you can expect that hence most of them charge higher price comparing to some other restaurants that you would find in the down town.  But its unique ambiance that we paying for is undoubtedly worthed.  However, they can be aggressively pushy too sometimes, when you try cruising along the Lygon street, the battle is on.  You will see lots of the restaurant's owner or representative standing in front of their shop and shouting or selling their food, most of them will promote and go for an extra miles by giving away the freebies or even offering 15% discount if we dine in their place and some of them even graping your arm trying to drag you come inside their restaurant.  Seriously, I've seen alot like this in Asian countries but never thought that I would experience this in Australia as well.  Hmmm.. Interesting!!!!!  And very very overwhelming though.

For me, those kind of tricks would never work at all, I will become more suspicious whether their food is actually really good because I believe the famous and truly yummy restaurant don't need to use any of this bait to lure the pedestrians.  Action speaks louder !!  Later on, we spotted this cute and OH-SO-Italian decor from the outside and the owner was standing there didn't try to force people at all only helping when someone asking some questions.  So that it is, this the one that we allowed ourself to become their victims.  Now, let take a look inside....

Once we stepped inside, it completely blown our mind away.  The place looks really cozy and more like an classic Italian home-style restaurant, you can feel that warmth welcome.  The decoration is rather rustic and earthy with Italian kitchen stuffs hanging on the wall and the checkers-style table cloth give a nice colour against the wooden table and chairs.  With some flowers and classic-art picture frames hanging on the brick wall here and there added some romantic touch to the dining room.

??Shots of Frangelico and Martini $9.50 each
I've never tried Frangelico before and always temp to try one.  One sip from this little tiny shot, was completely got me owned.  It was perfectly sweet with a strong hazelnut flavour.  I better get a whole bottle when I come back to Sydney.

Complimentary Garlic Bread
The bread was a little too tough, chewy and oily but love the taste of those garlic butter spreaded on top.

Half dozen of Kilpatric Oysters $17
If I see oysters on the starter menu, it's like nearly 90% that I will order them.  This time we just go for the ordinary Kilpatric-style oysters.  The freshly-baked oysters topped with heaps of slightly burn edge bacon, was quite dry and juicy in a way.  Flavouresome!!!!

Cheerssss...

Veal Parmagiana $33
Trust me, I know this photo looks terrible but its tasted absolutely beautiful.  The crumbed veal fillet, nicely and finely cooked thoroughly then evenly topped with tomato sauce and melted mozzarella so we can get the full burst of flavours in every bite.

Gnocchi Boccocini $22
My bad, I didn't even know that this dish is a vegetarian dish..  I was in the mood of some soft gnocchi and on the menu they have this gnocchi served with boccocini, what a nice combination!!!!  So yeah... I ordered this dish.  But it was great though, the pillow soft gnocchi served with generous amount of boccocini as well as some black olives.  I enjoyed this dish and it comes in a huge serving flat plate, hence I can manage to finish them off.

After finishing with our delicious mains, as it kinda weird in Italian restaurant to not try their homemade desserts.  Looking at their dessert menu, they got so many interesting sweets listed there, but what they delivered on the dish is quite disappointing.  As I mention a few times already by now, that I'm a sweets lover and very easy to please me with dessert but again this sweet really not as I expected to be in such a master of dessert country like Italy.

Lemon Tart $14
All I can taste was the strong lemon flavour here, and the pastry was too thick and not that crumbly and buttery as it should be.

Nutella Crepes $14
The Nutella filling crepes.  Tell me, who doesn't like nutella????  Not me for sure or not anyone that I know of so far...  But the nutella in this crepe doesn't help at all.  It just a thin half folded crepe, very very too average crepe to be presented in the restaurant !!!!  Smeared with a bit of nutella in between and served with vanilla ice cream.  Obviously !!!!  I need more of that yummy nutella, Pleeeeazze!!!!  I think a 10 years old kid can even make this dish, it may sound too harsh.  But seriously!!!

By the way, we actually really enjoyed our dinner for tonight, we had a nice entree and main meals but we didn't end the night on the high with the yummy desserts, which is quite a shame.

Chinotto - Italian-Style Coke
FYI, Chinotto is like a traditional Italian style coke.  Taste more bitter and strong compared to the normal coke.  For me, it's a nice compliment to balance off the sweetness from the dessert.
