Japan 2024 Trip Part 3: Sukiyaki Dinner at the Ryokan

Previously:

I was really looking forward for their dinner menu.  I booked the half board package in this stay, so breakfast and dinner are included.  I totally recommend people to have this kinda experience while you're staying at a good ryokan.  Where they normally serve a delicious meal accompanied with superb services.

As we stayed there for 2 nights, they served sukiyaki style dinner on the first night and another one as a shabu shabu or hot pot style dinner.  While for kids, they had a slightly different menus to suit them better.  Please see pictures below.

Dinner time needs to be reserved in advance.  Once we arrived in the dining room, our appetizer was already ready and served.

My daughter was very excited when she got the food in front of her.  Her dinner was served on a fancy car bowl.  It has some spaghetti Bolognese with some chicken katsu, nuggets, a bowl of soup with sausages and completed with chocolate donut and fruits.  They looked very appetising.

While for my older son, he got something called kids' kaiseki meal, the food was pretty much similar as my daughter's meal, but it came with some curry sauce and sashimi as well.

Deep fried sesame tofu, bite-sized rice malt bun, boiled taro, cooked ginkgo, kadaif

We started with kaiseki dishes, all appetizers and entrees came in a bite-sized or small portions.  Japanese people are really paying attention on timing.  I can see that sometimes the waitress stealthily took a peek inside our dining room, so whenever we finish with one dish, they will serve us with another dish.  They will always wait until we seem ready to have another dish, before serving the next dish.

Sashimi: horse mackerel, flounder squid and sweet shrimp

Yuba or tofu skin

Short time smoked mackerel pieces

Deep fried fig with beef loin

This little fried stuff was beyond delicious.  It said on the menu as a deep-fried fig with beef loin.  I don't think it was a fig, more like a peach or something else to me.  Beef was very tender, too tender actually until I can't really remember chewing it and all those wrapped inside a seaweed and coated with kinda crispy flour before then deep-fried.  The sauce was a little salty and tangy.  It was an amazing and clever tiny bite.

Creamy soup with Japanese leek

Clam soup

Japanese hot pot "Sukiyaki" of the beef and raw egg "Ranou"

Now, come to the main meal.  Sukiyaki is a Japanese style hot pot where you cook meat and vegetables in a sweet soy base sauce.  They will normally give you a raw egg too, crack the egg into a bowl and lightly beat it.  Once the meat is cooked to your liking, you can dip them into that beaten egg.  It will give those tender marbled meats another level of lusciousness and richness.

By the way, Oita beef is a must-try while you were here.  Their high-quality beef has earned them the same level of reputation as Hida beef or Kobe beef.  The marbling texture in its Oita wagyu beef is so pronounced and you can see a clear white line of layer after layers of fat that when you cooked them properly, it just melts in your mouth.

Pickled Japanese radish, eggplant and seaweed

Today's dessert - semifreddo

We then ended the meal with a nice light semifreddo.  We left with an extremely full yet happy tummy.   It was definitely one great meal.

Japan 2024 Trip Part 2: Yawaragi-No-Sato Yadoya, Yufuin

Previously:

In this post, I will talk more about the ryokan we stayed.  I'll do my best in giving you all as much info and pictures.  Before I get into more details, let me briefly talk about Yufuin town itself.  Yufuin is a popular hot spring town which seated at the foot of Mount Yufu in Oita Prefecture.  There are many traditional ryokans and modern hotels filled this area and many with onsen available at the resorts.  There are also 'sento' or traditional public bath that available to use.

Although this little town is less developed than her neighbour city, Beppu, they have variety of posh cafes and snack stalls, souvenir shops and museums around the town's main street that accessible on foot.  But once you go beyond the main areas, you can soon see the rice paddies and beautiful scenery of lake Kirin.

The ryokan that we stayed is called Yawaragi-No-Sato Yadoya.  This place has a great location, only five minutes short walk to Floral Village.  They served marvellous food and offered mind-blowing onsen.  We stayed here for two nights and we had the most amazing two nights of my entire stay on this trip.  Their services were top notch.  To top it up, the room, OMG!!!  The room was massive.  We booked a superior room with tatami area for us and two kids while my parents stayed in a standard Japanese-style room.  In the superior room, there are two single beds in the main area then we also get tatami area where it can be functioned as a lounge area on daytime and turned into futon bed at night.  However, they don’t provide that turn down service, we need to make our own futon bed.

In most Japanese ryokans, they will give spare sandals that you need to change into while you’re inside the building and there are also outdoor sandals available.

They gave use so many free gifts to take home, like these cute nail cutters, Japanese-style handbags, and glow bracelets for kids.

Below is the standard Japanese-style room.   This room is a lot smaller but still there is a separate area between lounge room and bedroom.  So, it is pretty decent for two person staying there.

Public bath

They have these separate women and men bath for guests to use.  There are also private baths that you can reserve in advance.  All together there are three private onsen spas available here.  Yawaragi, Naka-no-yu and Gaemon-no-yu.  Each of them has an indoor and outdoor bath.  On your stay, you can reserve private bath twice a day, once in the evening and one in the morning but it is first come first serve basis.  I have booked all three baths, at different times though.  However, I didn't get to go to the Naka one because I booked for early in the morning and I slept in.  The receptionist told me that Yawaragi is the biggest one and I agreed, this bath is spacious and so stunning too.

We soaked ourselves on a hot spring bath before dinner.

Japan 2024 trip Part 1: Nishitetsu Highway Bus to Yufuin

After a hot tropical getaway in Thailand, we headed for a winter wonderland trip to Kyushu Island in Japan for 2 weeks.  It was around the end of January, right in the middle of winter when we went.  We were visiting quite a few cities in that short amount of time.  We covered Yufuin, Beppu, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, and Osaka as well as nearby cities as well.  So, let’s go into more details in each post.  Hope you all will enjoy them and Octie Appetie…

First, we landed at Fukuoka International Airport with a direct flight from Bangkok. We arrived Fukuoka nice and early in the morning.  However, we didn’t stay in Fukuoka as yet that day.  Instead, we went straight to Yufuin.  There is a direct bus departing from airport to Yufuin.  If you prefer to go by train though, you need to go to Hakata city to do so.

In case if you follow my step, you can get the bus ticket to Yufuin from the airport, very convenient.  The bus company’s name is Nishitetsu Highway Bus, so right after you go out from arrival gate, the counter is on your right just opposite the information desk.  Ensure that you have your preferred time handy.  You can check their timetable beforehand from their website.
From what I know, bus runs every hour or less during peak hours.  And there could be two buses run at the same time.  Because they split me and my parent in a different bus, so we can all leave at the same time.  The bus departs from the highway bus waiting area and look for stand 3.

While we were waiting for our busses to depart, I dropped and sent my luggages that I won't use until later to my final destination city which was Osaka.  It helped me a lot when moving from city to city by train.  I have more hands to carry other things.  I also bought a SIM card and spoilt myself with some nice breakfast from 7eleven.

There are a few companies providing this door-to-door type of service.  After read quite lots of reviews, apparently Yamato Transport Global or easily spotted with their black cat symbol is one of the largest and most trustworthy company.  It is very popular among travellers as well.

It was my first time using this service and the lovely guy was very helpful and kind.  Prices are vary depending on the size of your luggage.  Please see picture below with size and price details.  We paid 3,880 yen or less than $40 for one big luggage and a small bag.  To be honest, I thought it would be more expensive than this.  It is totally worth it.  However, just confirm with your hotel before sending anything.  Normally, as long as you will stay there in the near future, providing that you have a reservation with that hotel, most hotels will accept and store your luggage until you arrive.

The bags get sent out the next day and arrived at destination on the following day.  They gave me a tracking number so I can track my bags whereabouts.  Goodbye bags.  Until we meet again…

I get a little too carried away with all those choices.  This 7eleven is one of the convenient stores that having immense and extensive products in the house.

I haven’t been to Japan for maybe 3 years or so.  I noticed that nowadays, they have this automatic money machine at some of the convenient stores, where you just put your payment there like from the self-service check out machine in major supermarkets in OZ but here though the cashier still scans all your items for you.  Japan is so smart!!

Different ratio of coffee, milk and sweetness just for a latte.   Japan is really paying attention even in a small detail like this for example.  Impressive!!

Lockers for hire to keep your luggage

The bus journey took less than 2 hours.  The driver dropped us at Yufuin bus terminal which is located right next to Yufuin station.  From there, we caught a taxi to go to our ryokan, Yawaragi-No-Sato Yadoya.   It costed us 700 yen.  By foot, it would take around 15-20 minutes walk.  I surely won't do it with all luggage we carried.  Or otherwise, it would be a nice walk from the station to our ryokan because there are lots of shops and things to see along the way.

After we checked-in, we had some spare times before our dinner reservation and private hot bath.  So, we were strolling around the town for a bit.  With just less than 200 meters walk along that Yunotsubo street, we already managed to grab some snacks like giant takoyaki, croquettes, dango and cheesecake.  We came back to this area the next day and spent full day there, so please stay tuned for more details in my next post.

There is a shop in between fried chicken and giant takoyaki shop that selling croquettes.  I was actually after the famous Yufuin Kinsho Croquettes shop that most of vloggers were talking about.  However, we couldn't find it as yet and we spotted this good-looking croquette shop.  We bought the mentaiko and triple cheese minced meat cutlet, they are 400 yen each.  They were absolutely enjoyable.  Hot and crispy on the outside, succulent meat inside with thick melted cheese in the centre.  Honestly, they were soooo good.  Now, I have a very high expectation toward Kinsho croquette.
