Japan 2024 Trip Part 14: Fukuoka Anpanman Children's Museum

Previously;

After had visited Dazaifu for half day, we spent the rest of our evening in Fukuoka, at Anpanman Children's Museum to be exact.  This world of Anpanman is situated inside Riverain Mall and the closest subway line would be Nakasukawabata Station.

You can spot these two mascots in front of the mall

The entry ticket both for adults and kids are the same price.  It is 1,800yen each (I think now they have increased the price to 2000yen).  You can watch Anpanman show where their cartoon characters come to life and doing some action moves and dancing along the music.  There are also plenty of playground spots and shops selling Anpanman-theme merchandises and food that can only be found here.  The place opens from 10 in the morning until 5pm.

Japan 2024 Trip Part 13: Dazaifu, Fukuoka

Dazaifu city would make a nice day trip from Hakata as this place can easily be reached by train in less than one hour journey.  There is this famous shrine, called Dazaifu Tenmangu especially for students or anyone who are seeking progress and success academically.  This is because this Shinto shrine dedicated to Tenjin, who is the deification of Sugawara no Michizane, the famous scholar, poet and politician of the Heian period.  You can find a lying bull where people believe for achieving academic success by rubbing its head.  They also sell some amulets to take home for good fortune as well.

Not only that, but you can also find a popular Starbucks shop for its unique and sophisticated design.  On top of that, there are lots of snack shops that you can run into along the sando pathway leading to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine like umegaemochi, rice crackers, and many many strawberry snacks and ice cream cone stalls.

Once get off from the train, you can either walk to the shrine or ride on a bus for only one minute ride.  However, with walking it would take around 5 minutes until you arrive at the shrine area.  For us, it kinda took more than an hour walk instead of 5 minutes, because we stopped at nearly all the shops and tried a bit here and there.

Umegaemochi 150yen

Umegae mochi is a Dazaifu's specialty rice cake with red bean filling.  There are a few shops selling this along the sando pathway (Omotesando) and you can see how they are being made from the clear window at each shop.  Ume in Japanese means plum.  The cake has an imprint of Japanese plum blossom on it.  As so many plum or ume trees are planted near the shrine of Tenjin who was very fond of this tree.

This thing was really good.  The strawberry was very fat, plump and juicy.  It is married very well with that mochi and sweet red bean paste.  They were sandwiched in between light sweet crackers.  However, for pricewise, it was slightly too pricey though, it costs A$7 for each.

This is one of the busiest Starbucks shops in Japan.  People keep lining up to take pictures with their front shop and inside decorations as well.  And lucky that early time of the year, they offered an opera frappuccino drink that I really like.  It was a rich chocolate and coffee drink blended together then topped with fresh cream and more chocolate sauce.

When we walked down back to the station after we'd visited the shrine, we got hungry again regardless how much snacks we had earlier.  So, we stopped at one of the restaurants along that Omotesando.  I'm not so sure the name of the restaurant was but they have these food replicas displaying at the front and they apparently offer varieties of menu that suit the palate of each single of us.  My son loved his curry katsu, while my husband wanted to have some soba and my parent went for something simple like pork cutlet don and for me, I was craving of some clear soupy dish that can keep me warm.  We can find all of them under this one roof.  We were happy with the food; they are basic but delicious.

FYI:  To go to Dazaifu from Hakata Station, it is not covered by JR Pass but instead we need to catch a train from the subway line and it costs 580yen per one way ticket or 700yen by bus.  From what I heard, you can also buy a bus ticket package from Hakata Bus Terminal that costs 2,100yen.  This package includes unlimited bus rides as well as a few promotional discounts.

Japan 2024 Trip Part 12: Ichiran Ramen and Komeraku Ocha Zuke, Fukuoka

Previously:

Ichiran ramen is a very popular ramen restaurant that full of innovations and they have successfully nailed their ideas too.  Not only serving delicious thick tonkatsu broth ramen, they are also known for their originality to come up with such smart moves like solo dining booth, the use of a form like exam paper for ordering, Kae-Dama service where you can order the second serve of noodle and also their spicy red sauce is uniquely and originally created here.  This chain ramen restaurant was born in Fukuoka in 1960.  They have grown so much, with nearly 80 branches across Japan and have spread their wings to international markets as well, like New York, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The ramen dish here is personalised base on your preference.  So, once you placed and paid your order through the vending machine, you then require filling in on that exam-like paper for your desire level of richness, spiciness and also how much exactly the amount of garlic or onion you want to be in your bowl.  When you ready, just leave the form along with the ticket near your window.  Someone from the other side will take them away and nicely close the curtain behind her.

In this place, there will be limited human interactions.  They try to keep it minimum for maintaining customer privacy as most Japanese are introverts where they tend to be a little shy in conversing.

Sticking with their zero-speaking mode, you can use the wooden tag to request something like ask for kids' bowl or require help in placing order.

As this was my first time trying Ichiran ramen, so I go with all the recommended options.  Just staying on the safe zone.  Turned out, the dish was delicious, the broth was rich of pork bone flavour.  That spicy red sauce complimented the noodle dish perfectly.  They also cooked their noodle as what I liked.  To be honest, all ticked, it was a flawless dish.  I ordered a classic tonkotsu ramen with half boiled salted egg and one extra sliced pork for 1,380yen or around A$14.

Try to avoid lunch and dinner peak hours as the place could get very busy.  Although the queue sometimes could look a little daunting, but they move pretty quickly.  Because the food served in jiffy and as most people come alone, there is no hanging around or spending time chit chatting.  Most of them left soon after had finished their meal.

Cold drinking water tap

On another night, we had an ochazuke type dinner in at Komeraku restaurant in Hakata Station.  It's a rice set meal that comes with ocha or tea broth in Japanese.  Japanese commonly divide their rice into four portions, first to have it on its own, second part to have it with pickles and condiments, third part of the rice having it with pouring tea broth in it and finally, you can have the last bit of rice in any way you like out of those three trials earlier.   Normally, ochazuke comes with an eel dish which is very popular in Nagoya.  But in this restaurant, they also serve ochazuke set in a form of chirashi don or fresh seafood over rice dish.

Deluxe ohitsu rice with 3-type of seafood 1,485yen

For me, the best combination would be having that fresh seafood over rice and topped with some wasabi pickles and what is look like to me like tiny garlic balls then for the bonito broth, I like to slurp it on its own.  Their bonito broth was really impressed, it has a strong smell of bonito yet not so overpowering, very aromatic and refreshing.

Fun fact: my husband noticed that in the whole restaurant, there were only three men there, which was my dad, my son and himself.  While the next door, the grill meat restaurant was packed with men.  He mentioned that maybe because this meal is so healthy and mostly for women who want to fill full yet delicious but not effecting their waistline.

On this deluxe set, the rice comes with some minced tuna, sliced tuna, sliced salmon, ikura, tamagoyaki, onsen tamago and also some chopped cucumber and spring onions.
